Dr. Max Cynader, CM, OBC, PhD, FRSC, FCAHS
Max Cynader is Director of the Brain Research Centre at Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, as well as a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia.
He holds the Canada Research Chair in Brain Development at UBC and is a Fellow of The Royal Society of Canada. Cynader obtained his BSc at McGill University and his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research studies of brain mechanisms in cortical development are relevant to visual and audition disorders and also to various neurological dysfunctions. He has made important contributions to understanding the mechanisms by which early use or misuse of the brain affects its functioning.
Cynader has received many honors including the Order of British Columbia (2007), the Researcher of the Year award from Life Sciences BC (2007), the Science and Technology Champion award by Innovation BC (2004) and the Gold Medal in Health Sciences. He is currently a Board member of the Pacific Alzheimer’s Research Foundation and a former spokesperson for Literacy BC.
