Third National Biennial Conference on Adolescents and Adults with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

April 9 - 12, 2008

FASD and Mental Health: The Wisdom of Practice

Coast Plaza Hotel and Suites at Stanley Park, Vancouver, BC

Adolescents and adults with FASD have a high frequency of emotional and behavioural problems that can range from difficulty coping with life's challenges to severe psychological and psychiatric disorders. In the absence of empirically validated effective treatment approaches, professionals and caregivers have been developing a "Wisdom of Practice" response to both the unique and common needs of individuals, their families and service providers. This year’s conference will highlight what has been shown through this "Wisdom of Practice" to be most effective in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues in individuals with FASD, and treatment and support for their families and service providers.
The conference will also focus on enhancing creative approaches to support treatment and program planning with the goal of effective policy development and implementation. For more information or registration go to the UBC IPCE webpage.

Brain Summit Symposium

March 27 and 28, 2008

Winnipeg, Manitoba

The Brain Summit symposium will bring together invited psychologists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists and pediatricians from the FASD Clinical Programs across Canada to enhance collective understanding of the National diagnostic guidelines as they relate to the diagnosis of the domains of brain function.
The objectives of the symposium are to reach further consensus (beyond current published Canadian Guidelines) among clinical programs that actively make FASD diagnoses. This symposium will be led by members of the Canada Northwest FASD Research Network and is co-sponsored by the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canada Northwest FASD Partnership.
The expected outcome is enhanced consistency across jurisdictions in the diagnosis of FASD, and increased consensus about which tools are used to diagnose the brain domains. This in turn should lead to improved understanding of the patients' needs for services and provide improved opportunities for future research.
