Brief Description: The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute submitted a 3-year proposal to Canada's Drug Strategy Initiatives Fund, February 2005 regarding an Alcohol Risk Assessment Project. The purpose is to increase knowledge and to provide resources, training and a system of referral to assist physicians and other health care professionals in Saskatchewan in addressing alcohol use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. This training model will prepare health care providers to ask, advise, and assist women in supporting healthy choices for themselves and their babies. The project includes development of key partnerships; accurate identification of the needs of identified professionals; development of quality, evidence-based tools/resources; delivery of a training program throughout the province; and an evaluation strategy to determine project effectiveness. This training initiative/model could be shared on a national basis.
