Brief Description: A program of The Asante Centre for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, in partnership with PLEA Community Services Society and the Ministry for Children and Family Development, with the following objectives: (1) to enhance knowledge of FASD within the larger service system; (2) to identify, screen and assess youth on an adjudicated probation order who are suspected of having FASD; and (3) to provide integrated services aimed at meeting the individual needs of youth diagnosed with an alcohol-related disability and their families. Youth are referred to the program by their probation officers through the use of the Probation Officer’s Screening and Referral Tool developed by the Asante Centre. Youth are eligible for the program if they are between the ages of 12 and 18 years, are on adjudicated probation orders and reside in either the Vancouver Coastal or Fraser Regions of BC. As youth are referred to the program all demographics, social and clinical data is entered into a statistical database. These data are providing a comprehensive description of youth who receive an FASD assessment. Qualitative data on the experiences of youth, families and service providers are also collected. Further development and evaluation of the Probation Officer Screening and Referral Tool through a Probation Officer Snapshot Survey was conducted in 2004-2005. Findings indicate that 26% of youth on probation may be affected by FASD. Changes to the screening tool have been made in order to increase probation officers' awareness of FASD, and we are currently seeking research funding to conduct a validation study on the tool.
