Principal Investigator(s): Dr. Suzanne Tough, email: suzanne.tough@calgaryhealthregion.ca; Dr. Andrew W. Lyon and Dr. Shahirose Premji

Start/End Dates: 2003- to date

Location: Calgary, AB

Description/Purpose: This study will determine the prevalence of prenatal alcohol and drug consumption in two groups of mothers, high and low risk, as determined by self-report and T-ACE score in the Calgary Health Region through analysis of meconium in their newborns. In addition, neonatal birth characteristics and maternal demographic and labor characteristics associated with maternal alcohol and drug use will be identified. This study will also refine specimen collection and testing techniques and validate or refute the self-reported prenatal information about alcohol and drug use as identified in questionnaires used in the Community Perinatal Care (CPC) study.
