Brief Description: Coaching Families mentors work with primary caregiver(s) of children aged 0 – 18 years old who have been diagnosed with FASD or who demonstrate strong behavioural and learning indicators of prenatal exposure to alcohol. The purpose of the program is to enhance protective factors, and decrease risk with regards to incidence of secondary disabilities of individuals affected by FASD and their families. The five Coaching Families mentors meet with families in their homes, or in the community, and support families by providing crisis intervention, coach families to appropriately adjust expectations and environments of individuals with FASD, and effectively linking families with appropriate ongoing support. Mentors support families in order to:
- Decrease rates of parent burnout and placement disruption
- Families have a better understanding of FASD and demonstrate appropriate coping skills
- Families are effectively connected with community resources that enhance and sustain their coping skills
- Families are better able to advocate for themselves and their child(ren)
