Brief Description: Health Canada has funded the Society’s Community Support Group (CSG) Volunteer Program—with three-year funding for a full-time Volunteer Coordinator/Outreach Worker. The project goal is to reduce problematic substance use (alcohol, drugs)—and the resultant harm from this dependency—among men with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). The Society intends to fulfill this overall goal by developing and coordinating a unique network of volunteer Community Support Groups (3 to 5 volunteers assigned to each client) that will provide the intensive and ongoing support and structure required by men with FASD. This demonstration project will test and provide the elements for a community-based model that can be replicated in other communities throughout Canada. The Society will evaluate the results and outcomes of the project both to make needed adjustments and also to inform development of a final report and communication plan. The intent is to communicate the model and its outcomes to federal and provincial government departments as a cost-effective, community-based program strategy to address a major social problem that exists in every community in Canada. The Society also hopes to communicate the experience from this project to a wider audience through FASD conferences for organizations and individuals concerned about addressing the needs of this population.
