Start/End Date: October 2006

Location: Vancouver, BC and Winnipeg, MB

Brief Description: It is well established that the opening of the eye slit (palpebral fissure) is a critical finding in establishing the facial features of FASD. It is also clear that there are racial differences in normal people from Asia, Europe and Africa. There are no norms for the Canadian mixed population and the graphs currently used from the United States are clearly inaccurate. Accurate norms based on the complex population of Canada are urgently needed for FASD studies and other conditions that include short eye slits. The combined populations of greater Winnipeg and Vancouver can model nearly all of the racial groups in Canada as a whole with the exception of Northern Aboriginal populations. Children at intervals of age will be sampled through the schools in these communities. This project has now been completed in Vancouver and is under way in Winnipeg.
