Principal Investigator(s): Dr. Stuart MacLeod, UBC, smacleod@cw.bc.ca, Co Investigator(s): Carmen Rasmussen; email: carmen@ualberta.ca, carmen.rasmussen@capitalhelath.ab.ca

Start/End Date: January 2006 – April 2009

Location: Edmonton Alberta and Vancouver, BC

Brief Description: We propose to identify and develop culturally appropriate interventions for Aboriginal women living in two large urban centres who are at risk for having children affected by FASD, in urban Vancouver, BC and in Edmonton, Alberta, respectively. These interventions will be delivered in non-Aboriginal specific settings (e.g. health clinics and early childhood development centres) and will address the characteristics and needs of Aboriginal women and young children (i.e. birth through five years of age). We will accomplish this through the collaborative efforts of Aboriginal women, Aboriginal organizations, early child development educators, mental health/addictions professionals and primary maternal health providers (nurse practitioners, family physicians, etc) by employing participatory action research (PAR) methods. The funding requested from ACCFCR will be used to help develop the Alberta arm of this project, for meetings between the two sites, and to develop the full CIHR proposal.
