Brief Description: community-policing initiative created to enhance the skills, knowledge and resources of law enforcement officers addressing FASD issues and clients within their communities. It consists of three training sections: (1) defining FASD; (2) legal process issues; and (3) community development strategies for clients with FASD. Sessions range from 2 – 14 hours. A mandated community-networking component has been incorporated to ensure supports are enlisted from within the community when individuals with FASD are encountered. Police officers are trained to partner in their respective communities with local health or FASD workers to (1) deliver FASD training to fellow officers and community partners; and (2) provide appropriate responses and supports for victims, witnesses or suspects with FASD.
Time Frame: ongoing
Type of Project: implementation
Population Served: urban, suburban, rural, and remote (open to all communities who employ or work with RCMP, Provincial, Municipal or Aboriginal Policing Forces)
