Brief Description: The Focus employment program is a specialized program for adults with FASD who are interested in gaining employment. Students learn employment skills, life skills, and academic upgrading in an environment designed to meet their individual learning needs. In addition to employment skills, students develop increased personal support networks and learn about FASD. Support and advocacy for the student form a major part of this program. As the student progresses through the course material and is ready for supported employment, positions are sought to provide valuable work experience.
Course Objectives:
- Offer specific job related training.
- Maximize individual literacy skills and memory strategies.
- Provide supported work placement and practical job experience within the community.
- Promote student awareness and understanding of FASD
- Develop personal management skills (anger, stress & time).
- Encourage the building of support networks.
- Improve verbal and nonverbal communication abilities.
This program has had very positive results. Findings indicate that using alternative strategies developed for affected adults and providing job support result in a valuable educational experience and stepping stones to employment. In addition, students indicate, and results show, involvement in the program has had a significantly positive impact on the lives of the individuals involved.
Prevention through education is also an important role in the Focus program. Training and awareness for health, justice, social service and education agencies as well as business, industry and community groups is provided.
