Brief Description: The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of a therapeutic respite program for children with special needs and their families, with a particular focus on children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Findings from this study will inform service providers and policy makers as to directions for enhancing the care to families and children affected by FASD and similar problems.

Methods
Overall study designs
- Qualitative inquiry identifying multiple perspectives on the need for, challenges of, and experiences of implementing and delivering a therapeutic respite program
- A pre-post intervention design to assess the degree of change in children with special needs and their caregivers who participated in a therapeutic respite program
A quasi-experimental design comparing change in children exposed and not-exposed to therapeutic respite program (pending funding of a related study of children with FASD and/or depending on wait-list development).
