Description:
The intervention project involves FAS classrooms that started 10 years ago as a Kindergarten Intervention program for children with FAS diagnoses and behaviour problems. The approach has been to develop an adapted environmental setting with low student teacher ratios (8-10 children in each group) and aides available. The teachers follow the regular Manitoba curriculum- with adaptations. Teachers are using many strategies suggested by Diane Malbin and part of their curriculum is disability awareness in all the students and the Roots of Empathy program. With student behavioural and academic improvement, children are integrated into the regular program. If re-integration does not work, children can be again included in the FAS classroom program that has expanded now to an elementary, junior high and senior high program. Also students have access to Speech and Language, OT, psych services. All children in the current program have been assessed in with FASD Diagnostic Clinic by Dr. A.E. Chudley and team. Students come with level 2 funding behaviourally involved or severe behaviour problems.
