Brief Description: Pilot project to have mentors in four northern communities. Mentors provide support for high-risk women with addictions and their families through a community-based model that intervenes early to prevent the births of children with FASD. Each community has one mentor who assesses needs, strengths and develops action plans that build a sense of accomplishment, link the women with agencies, services and other supports she needs. Program based on the principles of belief in women and the strength they possess which will be recognized and built upon. Women will encounter setbacks but will never be asked to leave the program. Priority for admission to the program will be given to women who are pregnant. Expected outcomes are fewer child apprehensions and children in foster care, increased involvement in community addictions programs, prenatal and family support programs, increased collaboration among community and service providers and improved linkages with provincial services.
