Brief Description: This project is an innovative, strength-based exercise and motor skills intervention for children with FASD. The philosophy behind the project is that by focusing on the individual strengths of each child, we will directly and indirectly improve numerous areas of that child's daily life. Ten children per year will be recruited via the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre, Sunny Hill Health Centre and the Asante Centre. The project will be done in three phases. In Phase One, a detailed assessment of the children through appropriate motor assessment tools will be done and standard psychological assessment tools will also be completed by parents and caregivers to assess the impact of the intervention on the child’s behaviour and adaptive functioning and on family stress level. Phase Two will involve the implementation of a client-centered motor skill program that will be tailored specifically to the individual strengths of the children. This program will be comprised of two sessions per week of 1.5 hours each for 8 weeks for a total of 16 sessions/24 hours of programming. The last session will be a two hour session of further testing. Phase Three will involve re-assessment of the children at pre-determined times following their involvement in the program (at 3 months and 12 months after completion) and will assess the long term benefits of the program and guide the on-going evaluation of this intervention strategy.
