Transitions of Adulthood for Youth with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD): A seed grant proposal

Start/End Dates
: July 2006 – February 2007

Location
: Victoria/Lower Mainland BC

Brief Description
: Consideration of appropriate research methods is especially salient in the field of FASD because the disorder is marked by a spectrum of deficits that can be difficult to identify (Streissguth, 1977). Although several studies (e.g., Conner et al, 2001; Kerns et al, 1997) involving young adults with FASD exist, none attempt to determine what methods might be most appropriate to capture participant views about their lived experiences. Thus, we currently lack appropriate methods to involve young adults with FASD in research that examines their life quality and lived experiences. The proposed exploratory research builds upon life quality research among intellectually disabled populations and addresses these neglected areas in the field of FASD. The study will explore ways to invoice active participation of young adults with FASD in the research process and to capture and reflect their views authentically. The two overarching questions are: (1) How do we support and involve young adults with FASD to take an active role in the research process? and (2) How can we develop processes that capture and reflect the views of young adults with FASD authentically, while acknowledging the possible limitations of these processes?  The grant application will be used: to conduct exploratory work to develop appropriate research methods with and for youth with FASD; to pilot test the research methods with youth; and to determine the feasibility of conducting action research with youth with FASD authentically, while acknowledging the possible limitations of these processes?
