Brief Description: A research project on the justice related needs of victims and witnesses affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). The purpose of this project is to compile existing materials to enable justice personnel to better communicate with and assist these victims and witnesses. The materials are intended to address issues such as the following: the nature of FASD and associated impairments; how these impairments can enhance the likelihood of victimization in community and institutional settings; how these impairments impact on a victim or witness' ability to consent; willingness to report to police or capacity to testify in court; ability to participate in and benefit from alternative approaches such as restorative justice and sentencing circles; possible mechanisms to identify victims and witnesses affected by FASD; appropriate strategies for meeting their justice-related needs; relevant case law.
